LIVIN' WHAT'S NORMAL

She never loved herself
or expected others to.
She never respected herself
so others weren't going to.
She let them take from her
what she couldn't afford to lose.
They stripped her of her worth
and left what they couldn't use.
She was left out in the cold
to suffer and die,
but she was used to the cold
and knew how to get by.

I'm just livin' what's normal,
what's normal for me.
It's all I've ever known,
it's all I can see.
It may sometimes hurt,
it's a wound I can feel,
but it's all I've ever known
and to me it's real.

He never thought it was right
but he needed it to survive.
He kept telling himself
that it kept him alive.
He let it control his life
and take away his pain.
It stole more than that
it grabbed all it could gain.
His addiction took him down
a road too often used,
and it got so comfortable
he no longer seemed confused.

There's more to life than living a lie,
more to life than just getting by.
Too many eyes seem only to see
the mere shadows of reality.
People know they need to change,
but it feels too hard, it seems too strange.
So, they once again sing their song,
hoping what's normal can never be wrong.
